Seoul Institute of the Arts Master Plan
Ansan, Korea
project completed while Project Designer for SIM Architects
This masterplan for the 10,000 square-meter Ansan Campus for the performing arts university SIA was conceived as a natural, organic extension of the campus completed in 2001. In response to increased enrollment and community involvement, the new facilities include a performing arts center, museum, student union, lecture halls, professor and student housing, offices and community outreach center. Nestled tightly into the valley on the edge of downtown Ansan, the design became a more fluid counterpart to the more rigid original plan. At the center of the new masterplan is a central lawn, which serves as a counterpoint to the hardscaped plaza at the heart of the original plan. The new buildings frame the commons as well as the view of the city beyond. Links to the campus go over, under and through the new multilevel facilities. In addition to the large central space, a series of smaller courts and public areas are scattered about the campus, increasing student interaction and creativity and the opportunity for impromptu performances.
